AHL Mandates Neck Protection; Barracuda Must Wear Neck Guards All Season

The AHL announced that neck protection is mandatory for all players, meaning the San Jose Barracuda must wear neck guards throughout the season.

This is a significant development in player safety, and this rule could soon become an NHL rule. USA Hockey also recently mandated that all youth hockey players, U18 and below, wear neck protection for the upcoming season.

The tragic events that happened to Adam Johnson in England have sent a ripple effect throughout the hockey world.

Last season, the former San Jose Sharks head coach was in favor of his players using neck guards.

"Hopefully, players realize the importance of wearing neck guards, but you know, that's something that is above my paygrade," Quinn said.

When the NHL began requiring players to wear visors, most players had already started wearing them. Those who didn't did not need to change their equipment. Only a few players remain who don't use visors, like Jamie Benn of the Dallas Stars.

The AHL is not following that pattern.

"All AHL skaters, referees, and linespersons, regardless of age or experience, will be required to wear approved cut-resistant neck protection beginning this fall," the AHL said in a statement.

The Sharks never had a player use neck protection in a game, but former defenseman Kyle Burroughs and Thomas Bordeleau tested the product during practices.

Last season, Jacob Peterson was one of the few Barracuda players to use a neck guard in a game. TJ Oshie, the founder of Warroad Hockey Co., has created a popular neck protection product.
