Phelan’s GOP foes back one challenger
Texas House Republicans who want to oust Speaker Dade Phelan have coalesced behind a single opponent: state Rep. David Cook, R-Mansfield. A total of 48 representatives are backing the two-term representative, including four who dropped their own bids for speaker. Phelan’s opponents, including Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, claim he has given too much power to Democrats by naming some to lead legislative committees. “This vote highlights the growing momentum for change within the Texas House, as members rally behind a shared vision of a decentralized leadership model that empowers all members,” Cook said in a statement. Phelan is seeking his third term as...

, It is a short turnaround for the Texas State Bobcats who will make the trip to Troy, Alabama in a Thursday night showdown with the Troy Trojans. Head Coach G.J. Kinne addressed the Sam Houston loss before talking about how the team is ready and focused on the Trojans. “Obviously it’s been a couple of days, but we are off to Troy,” Kinne said. “Addressing the Sam Houston [game], it was a disappointing loss, and one that can’t happen. We have a really good group of guys in that locker room that came together, and we are moving on to Troy.” Seeing...

Texans snap two-game losing with win over Navarro
The Texans snapped a two-game losing streak as Wimberley defeated the rival Navarro Panthers 47-21 in the district opener for both teams. Wimberley improves to 13-9 all time against Navarro. “I am pleased with how we performed,” Head Coach Doug Warren said. “It is always a tough place to play over there against a good football team. We jumped out on them, got off to a really good start and put it away really early. But I’m pleased with the win, and it’s always good to get the first district win underneath your belt. The goal is to win a district championship,...
Colton’s Corner: It’s gutcheck time for Bobcats after Sam Houston loss
, The long drive back from Houston gave me time to think about what I just witnessed at NRG Stadium where Texas State lost to Sam Houston 40-39. The Bobcats led 22-0 at the end of the first quarter then led 39-21 only to see the lead evaporate in front of their eyes as Sam Houston made a six minute drive to kick the game winning field goal with just seconds left in the game. To pour salt in the wound, the Bearkats found a ‘Take Back Texas’ hat after the game and began celebrating over the long-time rivals. Make no mistake about...
Bobcats stunned by rival Sam Houston on last second field goal
In the first meeting between rivals Texas State and Sam Houston since 2011, it was the Bearkats celebrating the win as the Bobcats fell 40-39 following a game-winning field goal with just six seconds remaining. It was a disappointing loss for the Bobcats, which led 22-0 at the end of the first quarter and 39-21 in the third quarter before the Bearkats made their comeback. “We didn’t play well enough, we weren’t disciplined and we didn’t coach well enough to win a game against a good team,” Head Coach G.J. Kinne said. “We have to get back to work tomorrow, which is...
Rattlers fall to Jaguars in first ever meeting
, In the first ever meeting between the Hays County schools, the Rattlers fell to the Buda Johnson Jaguars 49-19. Despite the loss, Head Coach John Walsh is still in firm belief the team is improving under the current situation. “I still believe that we are getting better,” Walsh said. “It was a two-score game for three quarters, so we are close. We are just limited by numbers given our circumstances. I’m proud of the way we are fighting and getting better each week. We are just going to do the same thing next week.” The Rattler defense came up with their first...

A look at the October marathon schedule in San Marcos
MOE JOHNSON DAILY RECORD COLUMNIST RUN WITH MOE By Moe Johnson As the George Jones song goes, “The Race Is On.” San Marcos runners will be busy in the month of October. I mentioned several weeks ago that San Marcos will have a race every weekend for the next four weeks. Looking back on the race calendar from years gone by, it is hard to remember the last time San Marcos had a race every weekend. In the early 2000 years the races were held down at the courthouse square. There were as many as eight races over the summer months. Many...
PAINT & PARTY
, , , PAINT & PARTY A local artist has made his mark on countless walls in San Marcos — literally, as many of them have been painted over time and time again. One might even argue that the fleeting nature of street art adds to its charm. Austin Sepulveda’s work toes the line between realism and surrealism “with a graphic edge,” which incorporates vivid pops of color that seem electric, giving the appearance of neon lights coursing through the image. Or as he put it, it’s as if he “brought a cartoon to life.” It is mind blowing the amount...
Rattlers sweep the Rockets to win second straight game
The Rattlers won their second straight district game as San Marcos defeated the Converse Judson Rockets 3-0 [25-14, 25-10, 25-12]. The win moves the Rattlers into a tie for fourth place with the Clemens Buffaloes. “This game was big, and I wanted us to take advantage of the big wins and gain confidence,” Head Coach Megann Ollett said. “We were able to do that, but we have a lot to work on in order to solidify some stuff for the district.” San Marcos had a rough start to district play, losing their first two matches to both Buda Johnson and Schertz Clemens. With their...

Thirsty Planet brewery moving to San Marcos
It's no surprise that Texas ranks among the top 10 states with the most craft breweries. With a burgeoning community of brewers and beer enthusiasts, the Lone Star State has firmly planted its flag in the craft beer revolution. According to the Texas Comptroller’s office and JobsEQ, a private-sector service that provides and analyzes labor market and economic data, breweries in Texas contributed an impressive $700 million to the gross state product (GSP) in 2020. This figure represents an annual growth rate of about 3 percent over the last decade, solidifying Texas’ position as a powerhouse in the industry. In...

Sacred Springs Powwow
, In 1995, when local music legend, attorney and entrepreneur Lucky Tomblin produced the Sacred Springs Powwow in San Marcos, Native Americans in Texas knew they had a home where the culture of the First People of the Americas was welcomed, celebrated and valued. Fifteen years later, the powwow’s standard was raised again by the Indigenous Cultures Institute, when representatives from the nonprofit visited Tomblin and his wife, Becky, and asked permission to reinstate the Sacred Springs Powwow as an annual event. Now in its fourteenth year, the powwow is scheduled for Oct. 5 and 6 at the Meadows Center for Water and the Environment. “Lucky Tomblin was a good friend to our people,” Dr. Mario Garza, the Institute’s Board of Elders Chair, said. “He and his wife immediately supported our efforts and the Tomblin family has been an abiding source of inspiration and support all these years.” The name “Sacred Springs” was important to the Miakan-Garza Band of the Coahuiltecan people — a state-legislature- recognized tribe of Texas and founders of the Institute — because trib-

Bobcats and Bearkats renew 100year rivalry at NRG Stadium
TXST FOOTBALL The 100 year rivalry between Texas State and Sam Houston State will finally be renewed as the Bobcats and the Bearkats square off at NRG Stadium in Houston. Head Coach G.J. Kinne has made it an emphasis this week about how much the game means to many Bobcat alumni despite not being played in over ten years. “That is what we talked to the leadership council about was how this was a rivalry game,” Kinne said. “This game means a lot to a bunch of different people. It is really cool that we are going to play them at NRG [Stadium]....
