SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) – A plea hearing originally set for Tuesday was rescheduled for two defendants charged in the 2020 death of Texas State University football player, Khambrail Winters, who was 20.
The new date for the plea hearing wasn’t available as of Tuesday morning.
In November 2020, Enalisa Briana Blackman and Michael Tyreek Ifeanacho, who were both 20 at the time, were charged with capital murder in connection with the death of Winters. The two, along with Winters, were planning to buy drugs at a San Marcos apartment complex, according to police.
Police said at the time they determined the drug deal was set up at the apartment complex where Blackman met the two others to buy “a couple ounces of marijuana.”
The three planned the robbery together and practiced how to carry out the plan. Blackman intended to meet the drug dealer in the hallway, and Winters and Ifeanacho were going to hide in the utility closet, according to the affidavit.
The plan did not go as intended, however; and the drug dealer brought an additional person with him.
“[Blackman] said she saw [Winters] fall but he got up and ran so she ran back to her apartment,” the affidavit read. “When [Winters] did not return to her apartment she went back to the pool area and found him lying on the ground unresponsive.”
Winters was shot in the chest and died at the scene. When officers arrived at the scene that night, they discovered Winters with a gunshot wound and attempted to perform life-saving efforts, according to police.
Williams is accused of disposing of the gun that killed WIllaims in Lady Bird Lake, according to an arrest warrant. According to the warrant, Blackman and the drug dealer claimed Williams was the one who fired the shot that killed Winters. The warrant said Williams was with the drug dealer and fired the shots.
Winters was a sophomore defensive back on the Texas State Bobcats football team . He was an honorable mention all-Sun Belt Conference performer in 2019. Winters was from Houston and went to Alief Taylor High School.
