Crews responded to a two-alarm fire Thursday night in San Rafael that left two homes damaged and street closures in place.

The San Rafael Fire Department said they responded around 11 p.m. to a report of a fire involving two properties, a duplex and a single-family dwelling, that were on a steep downhill slope.

Arriving fire crews had found that the upper portions of both homes had caught fire and both garages that were at street level were engulfed in flames, fire officials said.

Authorities helped a resident at the scene evacuate the structure and then conducted searches of both buildings, located at 60 and 64 Martens Blvd.

No injuries were reported, but Martens Boulevard will remain closed between Ivy Lane and Oak Avenue until further notice.

Crews said it took about 30 minutes to control the blaze. Firefighters worked to contain the fire in order to minimize damage to the living areas that were located below the garage and deck structures.

A press release from the fire department said complete extinguishment, overhaul, and salvage operations took several hours and crews stayed at the scene through the night.

A utility pole that stood along the street fronting the homes was damaged.

Investigators said the cause of the fire still remains under investigation and they did not have an estimate of damage to the structures or its contents.
