The Arkansas Community Foundation (ARCF) has announced the creation of the Fordyce Survivors Fund in response to the mass shooting on June 21 in Fordyce, Arkansas. 100 percent of donations to the fund will provide financial support for survivors of the shooting. ARCF will partner with Victim’s First, a volunteer-led nonprofit helping with immediate needs, along with the Mass Violence Survivor’s Fund—national entities with experience serving communities following more than 50 mass shootings nationwide.
California’s Junk Fee Ban No Longer Clashes With Restaurant Fees
Earlier this year, two trends gaining momentum neared a collision in California’s restaurants and bars. One was a statewide ban on junk fees — here defined as anything over and above the items purchased on a particular visit to a shop, hotel or other establishment. The other? The fact that a growing number of restaurants are charging fees in order to pay their staff a living wage or provide them with healthcare. The metaphorical collision in this situation is that California’s government seemed ready to treat restaurant fees as junk fees — which is to say, not allowing bars and restaurants to charge them.

We’re in the full swing of summer now, and most representative species are on the bite. From Big Sur up to Franklin Point, local anglers and visitors are pursuing rockfish, lingcod, halibut, sole and the occasional white sea bass. Much of this bounty can be credited to abundant bait in the bay. Squid spawns have started back up again in spots, mostly near Monterey. Big anchovy schools can be found in the deeper, more central areas of the bay. The year started out with a good showing of sardines, but we’ve received few reports of the speedy little baitfish recently.
