An avid cyclist herself, City of Sandy events coordinator Carol Cohen has long been an advocate for promoting kids on bikes. This is part of why the city started the Kids Corn Cross event at Liepold Farms 12 years ago.

This year’s event will kick off at Liepolds, 14050 S.E. Richey Road, at 12:45 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15.

Runs will go by age groups with the 2-5 year olds at 12:45 p.m., 6-8 year olds at 1:05 p.m. and 9 year olds and older at 1:25 p.m. OBRA licenses are not needed to participate.

“The best part of this event is seeing kids on bikes with smiles on their faces and wanting to know when the next bike challenge is,” said Cohen. “It seems like it gets bigger and better every year.”

Last year the event drew a crowd of about 75 kids.

Kids participate for $10 ($5 per child for registration and $5 for parking), and with that receive a goodie bag as well. Every participant will also receive a medal, and top riders will be given trophies and ribbons when they win races.

Registration will be available day-of, but online registration in advance is encouraged. To register online, visit tinyurl.com/y6asfzyw.

“(This event is really about) promoting kids on bikes,” Cohen explained. “This year it’s also a way to get kids excited about our new park (Cedar Park) with the skate park and pump track that’s opening up next year.”

This event is sponsored by Northwest Trail Alliance, EverFresh Fruit Co. and Clackamas County Bank.

Liepold Farms has hosted this event every year, and Cohen said, “if it wasn’t for Liepold Farms we wouldn’t be able to have this event.”
