A Utah Fire Captain Died in a Colorado Rafting Accident at Dinosaur National Monument
A Utah man who died in a rafting accident at Colorado’s Dinosaur National Monument has been identified as a 27-year Salt Lake City Fire Department veteran. Michael Harp, 54, was part of a party on a private allowed rafting excursion down the Green River in the Canyon of Lodore around 4 p.m. Thursday when their boat became caught on a rock in the rapid known as Hells Half Mile, according to the US National Park Service.
Another arrest from Peoa party shootout
A 25-year-old West Valley City man was arrested last week, making him the fifth adult to be apprehended in connection to a large shootout at a Peoa party in mid-May. Jose Carlo Mendez-Villa was taken into custody by Summit County Sheriff’s Office deputies on Thursday for five felony counts of discharging a firearm. He was not formally charged as of Tuesday morning, but he was being held in the Summit County Jail without bail.
South Salt Lake Animal Services urging people to consider adoption for their next pet
SOUTH SALT LAKE — South Salt Lake Animal Services said Monday its shelter is full, and is encouraging people to consider adoption when looking for that new pet. “We do our best to get all of these pups out into the play yard and give them as much attention as we can,” the agency posted on Facebook. “But the shelter will never be a substitute for a loving home. Every single one of these pups is so good and deserves the chance to be loved.”
Loveland Living Planet Aquarium welcomes baby penguin
DRAPER, Utah — After a rough first month of life, a baby penguin born at the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium is healthy and thriving. The penguin chick was born June 4. According to an aquarium press release, penguin chicks are “notoriously fragile” and have a survival rate of 30 to 50% in their first year of life.
Open Streets makes July return to downtown Salt Lake City

Where you can and can’t launch fireworks in Utah this year
SALT LAKE CITY — Fireworks are once again legal in Utah — for a short time this week, at least. Personal fireworks may be legally launched during two, four-day windows over the summer: July 2-5, to celebrate Independence Day; and July 22-25, to celebrate Pioneer Day. The legal period is 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. those days, and up until midnight on the day of each holiday.
