New updates are rolling in following the death of Sonya Massey , including her son speaking out to reveal how officials refused to tell him who shot her and how the deputy arrested in her case held six police jobs despite being discharged from the Army for “serious misconduct.”

As we previously shared, Sonya Massey was a 36-year-old unarmed Black woman who called 9-1-1 to report a possible prowler and ended up fatally shot by a White Sheriff’s Deputy in her own home on July 6, 2024. She was gunned down by Sangamon County Sherrif’s Deputy Sean Grayson who claimed he feared for his life while responding to the call at Massey’s home. In addition to calling her a “f***ing crazy b*tch,” he said she intentionally threw a pot of hot water on him, resulting in her death, since ruled a homicide.

On Tuesday (July 23), civil rights activist and attorney Ben Crump , joined by Sonya Massey’s family and friends, held a press conference at which time her 17-year-old son, Malachi Hill Massey , opened up about how he learned about his mother’s death. He said the hospital called him but never released the name of his mother’s shooter.

He said, “I got a call from the hospital, I never got a call from the police. They told me that my mom got shot in the eye and it came out of her neck. And they didn’t tell me who. They were just saying, ‘somebody.’ They never would tell me who. They just kept on saying, ‘Someone shot her.’ They never would never tell me who shot my mom. I think I was the first person to find out and I had to go tell my grandma. They wouldn’t tell me at all.”

Additionally, it’s also been learned that the man arrested and indicted in Sonya Massey’s murder, Sangamon County Sherrif’s Deputy Sean Grayson, was previously discharged from the Army for “serious misconduct” and went on to hold down six different police jobs.

Military records show that Grayson — who previously worked at the Kincaid Police Department — was serving at Fort Riley in Kansas when the Army discharged him in 2016, citing “Misconduct (Serious Offense).” According to NBC News , Army spokesman Bryce Dubee, Grayson had been a “wheeled vehicle mechanic from May 2014 to February 2016, but declined to provide further details about his discharge.”
