Condolences are pouring in today following the sudden death of Mark Van Rijswijk, co-owner and operations manager of the new Final Score Sports Bar in Renfrew. “It’s with a heavy heart that we have to announce the passing of our Ops Manager and Co-owner Mark Van Rijswijk,” reads a July 2 social media post.
Bay Area group achieves impressive caking-baking (and donating) milestone
Since signing up in 2011 as a volunteer baker for Cake4Kids, Robin Wolfgram has baked more than 200 cakes. “I think the exact number might be 204,” Wolfram said. As impressive as that number is, though, it is just a small percentage (0.68%, to be exact) of all the cakes Cake4Kids volunteers have baked for Bay Area children since Libby Gruender founded the organization in Sunnyvale in 2010.

Repair cafe at Saratoga Library helps divert trash from landfills
For Saratoga residents with broken toasters, bicycles, blenders and other household items, a new panacea awaits: the Saratoga Library’s repair cafe. At the June 30 event, residents were invited to bring their broken household items to the library’s community room, where volunteers not only helped them repair the items for free but could teach them to fix it themselves in the future. The event offered repair and maintenance for clothes, bikes, certain electronics and small electronic appliances.
Kerasotes Theater Chain Closes After 115 Years in Business
Distribution sources confirmed published reports that four remaining theaters operated by Chicago-based Kerasotes Theatres are closing immediately. Virtuosa harpist, storyteller and improvisational pioneer Destiny Muhammad has turned the harp into an instrument that makes people of all ages stop and gasp, “I didn’t know a harp could do that!” Muhammad, who performs professionally and at enrichment assemblies in schools, weaves social justice work and African American history education (which is social justice work these days) with gorgeous music. Kim Nalley Trio in Los Gatos
Perhaps since birth, music writing has been in the cards for musician and vocalist Kim Nalley. Born into a musical family, Nalley took piano lessons from her grandmother before receiving a formal music education at the ACES Educational Center for the Arts in Connecticut. Later, she moved to the Bay Area, where Michael Tilson Thomas hired her to sing a program of George Gershwin tunes for the SF Symphony. Immersed in all things jazz, Nalley owned and operated Jazz at Pearl’s, a North Beach nightclub in the mid-aughts. Working with an impressive three-and-a-half vocal octave range, Nalley explores jazz roots with a masterly hold on the music.
