The initial weeks of NFL training camp can be challenging for a quarterback, particularly in the current era where social media aggregators are reposting daily highlights and lowlights from training camp, often leading to exaggerated reactions from commentators and fans.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was the subject of such discussions on Tuesday when he threw four interceptions during the last five throws of practice in Santa Clara, California.

Purdy addressed concerns about his atypical interceptions by sharing his training camp approach.

"The time is now for us to step out and experiment," Purdy commented on KNBR on Wednesday. "Is it possible to fit the ball into this gap on this play? Can I deceive Fred [Warner], [Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles], or De'Vondre [Campbell] in some way and then complete the pass on the opposite side?

"It's essential to test these things. During the season, the focus is on ball security with every snap and play, so it's not the time to experiment, but we have that opportunity now. My current mindset is to safeguard the ball while also being bold, trying new things, and working them out."

Purdy enters his second year as the 49ers' starting quarterback.

Last season, Purdy's first full year as the starting quarterback for the 49ers, he demonstrated remarkable efficiency. Over 16 games, he passed for 4,280 yards, scored 31 touchdowns, and had 11 interceptions, ending the season with the highest passer rating in the league at 113.0.

His 11 interceptions ranked 10th in the NFL, which was not alarming as the 2024 season approached. This perspective remains unchanged despite the four interceptions he threw at the end of Tuesday's practice.

"There are moments during practice when I decide to take a chance and see if something works," Purdy explained. "This helps determine whether it can become part of your strategy for the season."

The techniques Purdy attempted in Tuesday's practice likely won't be included in his in-games strategies for the season. Purdy and the 49ers will begin their three-game preseason slate with a matchup against the Tennessee Titans at Nissan Stadium on Aug. 10.
