Two Horses Struck And Killed On 5 Freeway In Newhall Pass

Two horses were struck and killed Tuesday night on the 5 Freeway in the Newhall Pass.

Around 9 p.m. Tuesday, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) received reports of three horses running in lanes on the 210 Freeway near the 5 Freeway, said Officer Josh Greengard, spokesperson for the CHP Newhall Area Office.

“Subsequent callers reported that horses were hit by passing motorists on the northbound I-5,” Greengard said. “Several Newhall CHP units responded to the equestrian hazards.”

CHP officers arrived and found two dead horses and the vehicles that struck them on the northbound 5 Freeway near Balboa Boulevard, according to Greengard.

Good Samaritans located a third horse on the northbound 5 Freeway near the 14 Freeway interchange and were able to prevent the animal from being struck, according to Greengard.

“Caltrans and L.A. City were summoned for recovery of the living and deceased horses,” Greengard said.
