SAULT STE. MARIE — On Friday, Sault Ste. Marie celebrated a large part of what makes it special with Engineers Day at the Soo Locks.

Engineers Day brings in hundreds of residents and visitors each summer to experience the locks, see freighters passing by and enjoy other fun family-friendly activities downtown.

Always held in the last week of June, Engineers Day honors the birthday of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which maintains and operates the locks. This year marks the 249th birthday for the corps.

The locks play an integral role in the local, state and national economies, as freighters ship needed supplies through the Great Lakes.

During Engineers Day, people get the chance to walk across the locks and see passing freighters up close. They also got a good view of the New Lock currently under construction.

The day's events also included an arts and craft show in front of city hall, and various vendors on Portage Avenue.

The Soo Locks visitor center and the old weather bureau building, located next to the entrance to the locks, were also open to the public for free.
