Sportsbeat Preview: Tussey Mountain Titans

New Enterprise (WTAJ) — When Tussey Mountain made the trip to Northern Bedford High School, home of their rivals, for the Inter-County Conference media day, second-year head coach Jacob Dasher wasn’t thrilled with about ICC coaches picking the team to finish last.

“I think we were a lot better team this year than we were last year,” he said. “Last year we had better athletes, but not everybody gelled. So I think the team aspect of things, kids getting along and, the unselfishness of this group really show.”

Tussey Mountain went 2-8, and despite a few standout performances, success was hard to come by. Players didn’t hesitate to say poor chemistry was costly.

“We had a very selfish team last year, a lot a lot of people complain and a lot of people yelling at each other,” junior Noah Lucko said.

The Titans feel chemistry issues are now in the past, but improving this year will be mean filling some big shoes. Thousand-yard rusher Isaiah Sosak graduated, as did leading receiver Kyler Coffman. But Tussey returns fourth-year starting quarterback Landon Myers, and that’s always cause for excitement.

“There isn’t much we’re going to see at the high school level that he hasn’t seen yet. And last year was a huge step for him, it was the best year of his career,” Dasher said. “Just being able to read a defense and even this summer, he’s been able to flip stuff around. And if he sees something on the field, I’m completely okay with him audible and doing whatever he wants because he knows the offense and I’m very comfortable with him running it.”

“We got a lot of veterans coming back, so it’ll be a lot of experience on the field,” Senior offensive lineman Colton Watkins said. “You know we don’t have the excuse anymore, like, hey, we’re young, inexperienced. (There is) a lot of accountability on the player’s front. And I think as far as that goes, we can make a lot of a lot less mistakes is what I should say.”
