The Upscale Singers, now with more singers—44, the most in the group’s history—will perform “Stage, Screen and Bandstand!”7 p.m. Saturday, April 6, and 2 p.m. Sunday, April 7, at the Cactus Shadows Fine Arts Center, 33606 N. 60th St.
“This will be our first spring concert at the wonderful Cactus Shadows Fine Arts Center. Our Christmas concerts were such a success there, and we will be once again able to use the large stage to spread out and have set decorations and special lighting. It will be quite theatrical,” director Margaret Watson said.
Tickets, available at upscalesingers.com, are $35 for adults and $15 for ages 18 and younger. A silent auction and raffle, supporting Upscale Singers’ many outreach programs, begin one hour before showtime on both days. The concert is reserved seating.
“This show is full of music that people are going to love,” Watson said. “‘Oklahoma!’ and ‘West Side Story’ are real favorites with audience members, and the movie theme songs and ’60s hits will bring back fond memories. The arrangements are both beautiful and entertaining, and there will be something for everyone.”
For example, the music of “Oklahoma!” will feature the harmonies of “People Will Say We’re in Love” and “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’” as well as fun songs, such as “I Can’t Say No” and “Kansas City.”
The “West Side Story” selections include what Watson considers some of the most beautiful music in the show: “‘Tonight’ and ‘Maria’ are arguably two of the Leonard Bernstein’s greatest creations, and the choir sounds fabulous singing them. Of course, the lively ‘America’ will be a delight.”
The movie tunes include several classics, such as “Moon River,” “Singin’ in the Rain” and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”
The music of the ’60s will feature a fast-paced medley full of top-40 hits, such as “Teenager in Love,” “Hit the Road, Jack,” “Let’s Twist Again,” “Leavin’ on a Jet Plane” and “All You Need is Love.”
The Upscale Kids will be back again, this time with an audience member-turned-singer who was so enthralled by the Christmas concert she had to join the fun. The group will perform Broadway hits, including “When I Get My Name in Lights” from “The Boy from Oz,” “Do-Re-Mi” from the “Sound of Music” and “Consider Yourself” from “Oliver.” Two of the 2023 scholarship winners also will perform Broadway hits.
