SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Mayor of Scranton expressed her thoughts on Sunday about President Joe Biden’s decision to drop out of the 2024 presidential race.

Mayor Paige Cognetti says it’s a difficult day, but is remaining optimistic about the party’s future.

Mayor Cognetti is sad to hear the latest election news.

On Sunday, she praised what President Joe Biden has done for the city of Scranton and the state of Pennsylvania and hopes that work will continue in the future.

Mayor Cognetti spoke with 28/22 News outside her home in Scranton Sunday, the same city president Joe Biden calls his hometown.

“I’m heartbroken. It’s been incredible to be Mayor why he’s been President, not just because he’s the hometown guy but because he’s been great for Mayors and for local governments,” said Mayor Cognetti.

“He would be an excellent Vice President. He’d be an excellent President. He’s an excellent governor, do however this goes in the next few weeks here we are very proud that Governor Shapiro that his name is in the mix,” said Mayor Cognetti.

Staying positive, she feels this is a chance to celebrate the 46th president of the United States and his time in office in a renewed way.
