Police identify Clare hit-and-run driver accused of injuring motorcyclist and passenger
CLARE — On July 18 around 11:23 p.m., a serious accident occurred at the intersection of 5th and McEwan in the city of Clare. A white Chevrolet SUV, driven by Thomas Vernon Claringbold III of Clare, was speeding south on McEwan and struck an orange Harley Davidson motorcycle at the intersection, police said. The motorcycle was carrying a male driver and a female passenger, both from Mason, MI, who suffered serious injuries, police said. One person was taken by ambulance, while the other was flown out of the Clare Municipal Airport by a FlightCare helicopter. Claringbold, who fled the scene, was quickly located and identified. Police said he was uninjured. He was arrested and charged with the following crimes:
Driver of garbage truck killed in crash in Northern Michigan
In a statement on X; Michigan State Police said a GFL garbage truck was traveling west in Bagley Township near Gaylord on Friday. The truck struck a tree and ran off the road, killing the 43-year-old driver.
Body of 26-year-old man who fell off boat found in Lake Michigan
Update: The Muskegon County Sheriff's Office says the body of a 26-year-old man who fell off a fishing boat in Lake Michigan has been recovered. Around 10:30 yesterday morning, rescue crews from the U.S. Coast Guard, the D-N-R and multiple police agencies responded to the scene a couple miles from the Muskegon channel. But high waves prompted postponement of the search. It turned into a recovery operation this morning.
Mecosta County man who saved 2-year-old receives prestigious award
MECOSTA COUNTY - A Barryton Man received a Lifesaving Award on Thursday from the Mecosta County Sheriff’s Department. Michael Huffman of Mecosta County saved a 2-year-old girl after he found her in a body of water on his property. He resuscitated the girl and saved her life. He said, “My dog barked, another kid in my pond kind of just was shocked to see him in there. Shocked to see the girl in there.” Huffman acted quickly, and he thanked his connections to first response teams. “My father was in rescue and fire, and a lot of friends. ... I was in fire department for a few years, so I got a little bit of background,” he said.
