Baltimore ties a record of four consecutive days at/over 100 degrees
BALTIMORE — It's not just hot, it's record-breaking hot here in Baltimore and across the whole state of Maryland. It's official as of 2:00 PM EDT, BWI has officially hit 100 degrees. This doesn't break the record for today, but it ties a heat record. As of today July 17, 2024, BWI has recorded four consecutive days at or above 100 degrees. On July 14, BWI recorded 101 degrees tying a record set back in 1954. On July 15, BWI recorded a high of 102 tying a record set back in 1995. On July 16, BWI recorded a high of 104 set back in 1988. The last time this happened was in 1930. The hottest temperature recorded at BWI was 107 degrees on July 10, 1930. So no you are not crazy, it has just been crazy hot!
Three more heat-related deaths reported in Maryland, including two in Baltimore
BALTIMORE - Maryland is reporting three more heat-related deaths, including two in Baltimore City.According to state data, there have been nine heat-related deaths this summer, which is the same amount as in 2023.Temperatures reached 100 degrees for four straight days -- from Sunday to Wednesday -- for the first time since 1930.Three of Maryland's heat-related deaths happened in Baltimore, four in Prince George's County, one in Anne Arundel County and one in Kent County.Overall, four of those deaths were between the ages of 45 and 64, and the other five were older than 65 years old.State data shows there were 21 heat-related deaths in Maryland in 2019, 21 in 2020, 16 in 2021, five in 2022 and nine in 2023.Dr. Clifford Mitchell, with the Maryland Department of Health, says when it comes to the sweltering sun, everyone needs to stay hydrated and stay cool."You can have a weak heart rate, you can have confusion, lightheadedness, dizziness, those are all signs of potentially life-threatening heat exhaustion or heat stroke," Mitchell said.

Former DCist staffers launch worker-owned local news site
Six former staffers at DCist – the local daily news site which WAMU acquired in 2018 and shuttered in February – are set to launch a worker-owned local news website. The site, called The 51st, will not be a relaunch of DCist. For one, founders say it’ll be a weekly newsletter instead of a daily news site. But The 51st will feature the sort of content DCist was known for: event guides, curiosities, the quirks of D.C. life and history, and deeply reported stories.
