Seattle Kraken on The Hockey News
Kraken Rally Three Times Before Red Wings Tally OT Dagger, 4-3

The very last thing the Seattle Kraken wanted to see during their President's Day afternoon game with the Detroit Red Wings was a real octopus on the ice.
But just over a minute into overtime at Climate Pledge Arena, there it was. A Red Wings fan had waited three periods-plus to fling his smuggled (and no doubt pungent) team mascot onto the ice.
When Ben Chiarot scored the OT winner, the fan got the chance.
Despite 41 shots overall and two scores by Jared McCann, the Kraken couldn't capitalize on three separate rallies, dropping the first game of an extended homestand, 4-3.
1st Period
For this Lunar New Year-themed game, the Kraken apparently made a resolution to get off to a faster start. In the first six minutes of the game, they put seven shots on Detroit goalie Alex Lyon.
On a Kailer Yamamoto cross-checking penalty, the Kraken took as many SOG as the Wings (two).
Moritz Seider's center point blast eludes Kraken goalie Joey Daccord, making his 24th start in the last 27 games. 1-0 Detroit at 13:30.
Andre Burakovsky has Seattle's best chance of the period, an open look from the slot. Lyon, who's been the difference in a strong offensive period for the Kraken, makes a big save to keep Detroit in front.
The cross-checks are even a one per team, as Ben Chiarot goes off at 16:37. The Kraken have good zone time and an in-close backhand try by Jordan Eberle - like the one he scored in Boston - but Lyon makes the save.
With five seconds remaining in the penalty, Jared McCann's left circle drive is too hot to handle. The power play goal, McCann's team-leading 23rd, ties the game 1-1 at 18:32.
Seattle outshoots Detroit 15-6 in the period.
2nd Period
Each goalie performs a can-you-top-this save. First, Daccord comes way out of his net to foil Detroit's Andrew Copp.
Right after, Lyon makes a tremendous glove save on a Brandon Tanev grade-A chance.
The Red Wings send two forwards to the top of the crease. Lucas Raymond is uncovered for a putback that gives the visitors a 2-1 lead at 7:18.
Tomas Tatar's wrister hits the right post.
The Kraken show they can cause trouble in front of the opposition net, too. McCann and Matty Beniers come flying into the Detroit zone. Jamie Oleksiak centers to McCann, who whacks it off Lyon's pad, then whacks again - or maybe it goes off his skate - just hard enough to push the tying goal past the goal line.
McCann's second goal of the game, 24th on the season, re-ties the contest at 2-2 at 10:51.
Attention, NHL. The Kraken first line is back together and buzzing. Jordan Eberle shakes free on a partial breakaway, but fires wide.
On another rush, both Jaden Schwartz and Andre Burakovsky end up prone on the ice below Red Wings outside the crease. This team is playing hard.
So are the Wings. Daniel Sprong hasn't lost his scoring touch since signing with the Red Wings, as he demonstrates on the finish of a 2-on-1. The ex-Kraken gives Detroit its third lead, 3-2 at 15:58.
Detroit outshot Seattle 15-13 in a wide-open middle 20. For the game, SOG are 28-21 Kraken.
3rd Period
It's been a rough road trip for Detroit goalie Alex Lyon, allowing 11 goals combined in losses at Edmonton and Vancouver. But he's been sharp today, already with 26 saves.
He makes two more excellent stops on that buzzing Kraken top line, rejecting McCann's hat trick bid and a followup by Beniers.
On a delayed Detroit penalty, Jaden Schwartz gets the 6-on-5 equalizer. Lyon, flat on his back (Lyon on his back?), raises a glove. But he's not Dominik Hasek, so Schwartz's laser, his 11th, blows by him at 7:25.
With 4:20 left, Kane hits the right post so cleanly I'm still hearing the ringing.
Detroit's Olli Maatta takes a dangerous (and unnecessary and dumb) cross-checking penalty at 18:16, shoving McCann's head into the glass. The Kraken can win the game on the power play.
Overtime
McCann is okay, and plays on the PP, but Seattle doesn't win the game. 3rd period shots were 12-11 Seattle, 40-32 through regulation.
For the third consecutive game, and fourth since Seattle entered the NHL, these two teams will need overtime or a shootout to settle matters.
Ben Chiarot settles matters for the Red Wings at 1:07 of OT, 4-3. Daccord loses his 10th game after regulation. Seattle gets one point to start their homestand, but that's all.
