3rd Period Of Kraken-Bruins Caused Confusion On Benches, In Press Box

"Who are you going to believe, me or your own eyes?"
That famous line was uttered by Chico Marx, one of the Marx Brothers. Many people think Groucho Marx said it, because Chico was dressed like Groucho at the time and - hey, just watch the 1933 classic Duck Soup . You can thank me later.
That line came to mind in the 3rd period of Monday's Seattle Kraken game against the Boston Bruins.
Three significant plays DIDN'T happen within those 20 minutes - though the Bruins were sure the first one did, referees thought the second one did, and some fans and reporters were sure the third one did.
The first one involved former Kraken Morgan Geekie, who signed with Boston in the off-season. Geekie exited the penalty box, skated behind the Kraken defense, and while falling into goalie Philipp Grubauer, swept the puck into the net.

Down by an apparent goal with nine minutes left, Kraken coach Dave Hakstol challenged the play for goalie interference. Win the challenge and the score would revert to 2-2. Lose, and in addition to falling behind, Seattle would incur a minor penalty for delay of game - an infraction meant to limit frivolous challenges.
“I thought we were going on the power play, 100 percent,” Bruins coach Jim Montgomery said after the game.
Yahoo! Sports thought so too, posting this above a video clip of the play:

Montgomery beat out Hakstol for last season's Jack Adams, awarded to the NHL coach of the year. Monday, though, he came out second best; upon video review, the goal was disallowed.
Jordan Eberle, getting fist-bumps for his wacky 2nd period goal - which we can't discuss here because it didn't happen in the 3rd period. It's explained in detail in our Monday game story .

Play #2 which didn't actually happen came with under five minutes left. "The B’s got their first power play on a phantom tripping call on Jordan Eberle." Not our words - those of Boston Herald sportswriter Steve Conroy.

This conveniently leads us to our final no-it-didn't event. Without question, a Bruins' power play goal tied the game and forced overtime. The identity of the scorer, though...
The shot which ended up in the net was taken by David Pastrnak, who earlier in the contest had scored his 37th and 38th goals.
Bruins fans among the Climate Pledge Arena crowd were so sure Pastrnak completed a hat trick, they flung all manner of headgear onto the ice.
This is how we described the sequence in our Monday game story .
Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports
"Originally, it appears Pastrnak's shot cleanly beat Grubauber, and Boston fans litter the ice with hat trick hats.
However, Charlie Coyle is later credited with a deflection goal, meaning all those lids were prematurely flipped."
Fans weren't the only one mistaken about the true scorer. Check out this headline and lead paragraph from the Associated Press .

That's how it appeared in online sports sections across North America.
It just reminds us once again that nobody's prefect.
