KC Current acquire Alana Cook from Seattle Reign

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Current acquired another defender from the Seattle Reign on Monday.

The Current agreed to a trade with the Reign, sending Alana Cook to the Current in exchange for $40,000 in allocation money and $75,000 in intra-league transfer funds along with another $25,000 in intra-league transfer funds if she reaches certain incentives.

Cook has a lengthy resume. She is a two-time NWSL Defender of the Year finalist and awarded NWSL Best XI in 2021 and 2022.

She started her career with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in 2019, signing with the French Première Ligue side out of college. She played in 21 games, helping the club win the French top-flight division for the first time in history. Cook also played in nine Champions League matches.

Cook joined the Reign in on a short-term loan before the inaugural NWSL Challenge Cup in 2020, starting in three games. Then she briefly returned to PSG before signing a permanent transfer with the Reign in June of 2021, playing in 84 games with 81 starts across all competitions for the franchise.

“Alana is a smart and experienced center back who has proved that she can play at the highest levels,” head coach Vlatko Andonovski said.

“She will be a great addition to this team and help us become even more competitive going forward.”

Cook will begin training with the Current this week and and will be available for selection when the NWSL Secondary Transfer Window opens Aug. 1.

The Current are currently playing in the 2024 NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup. The group stage of that tournament ends on Aug. 1, when the Current face the Tigres UANL at home.

Cook will be available for selection for that match.
