The Seattle Seahawks announced another couple of roster moves today, as has been their habit just before their training camp practices begin at the VMAC. This latest move involves their outside linebacker rotation, which is getting tweaked at the very bottom.
The team has signed undrafted rookie outside linebacker Jamie Sheriff out of South Alabama. In 37 games over the last three years he totaled 10 sacks , 17.5 tackles for a loss and two forced fumbles. To make room for him on the 90-man offseason roster, outside linebacker Josh Onujiogu has been waived with an injury designation. Onujiogu had been at the tail end of the team's depth chart in the "RUSH" position.
It's not impossible, but Sheriff faces an uphill battle making the initial 53-man roster. On the strength of his contract alone Dre'Mont Jones is going to get a ton of reps at the top of that spot on the depth chart, even if Boye Mafe (who's listed second) is more deserving of the opportunity. Then there's Darrell Taylor (who posted 9.5 sacks last year) and the highly-regarded undrafted rookie Nelson Ceasar to contend with, also.
Sheriff isn't coming out of nowhere, though. He previously spent time with the Seahawks during their rookie minicamp back in May. With a little luck and an impressive preseason he could make the cut.
