Improperly Discarded Materials Cause Fire On the Roof of the New Santa Rosa Courthouse Being Built
There are no reports of injuries after a fire on the rooftop of the new courthouse being built at the Sonoma County administration center in Santa Rosa. The fire, which started in a trashcan on Saturday afternoon, was quickly knocked down by firefighters. Santa Rosa Fire Marshal Paul Lowenthal says it was caused by materials “improperly discarded” into a large trash bin on the roof of the six-story building. The flames melted the trash can and spread to wooden decking. The melting plastic also caught a second trashcan on fire on the sixth floor.

Over the weekend, an ordinary traffic stop in Rohnert Park took a turn after an officer from the Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety initiated a procedure due to a license plate light violation. During the interaction, the officer encountered Andrew Bailey, a resident under county probation, which allowed for searches in case of potential probation violations. According to the City of Rohnert Park Police & Fire, the encounter led to the discovery of a methamphetamine pipe and what Bailey confirmed to be psilocybin mushrooms in the glove compartment of his vehicle.

Fireworks and Handguns Recovered During the 4th of July in Santa Rosa
Santa Rosa Police was especially busy for the 4th of July holiday. Last Thursday, over 2,000 non-emergency and 911 calls were made on the Fourth of July holiday due to illegal fireworks use and an uptick in other alcohol-related and violent crime calls. Hundreds of pounds of fireworks throughout the day and night with large groups of people throughout Santa Rosa gathered to set off illegal fireworks. MLK Park on Hendley Street had the largest concentration of people at one point, with over 200 spectators. One man suffered a severely broken arm while handling fireworks at the park. Police also arrested two people, including a juvenile, for illegally possessing a handgun.
Cal Fire arrests man on suspicion of sparking Pocket Fire with lawn mower
Cal Fire officers arrested a Cloverdale man in connection the Pocket Fire that was sparked Saturday in Sonoma County. The Pocket Fire burned 11 acres, north of Geyserville. According to Cal Fire, it was sparked by someone using a riding lawn mower to cut dead annual grasses that were 4 feet tall. It's the second arrest Cal Fir's Sonoma-Lake-Napa law enforcement unit has made this week in connection to wildland fires. The first arrest was made after someone started a grass fire by using a weed-eater in dry grass. The suspect in the Pocket Fire was arrested on suspicion of a felony charge of causing a fire of a structure or forest land and three misdemeanors. According to Cal Fire, they are doing maximum enforcement on human-caused wildfires due to current fire conditions.
