Two people had been struck by the train shortly before 2 a.m. Monday on the Norfolk Southern line near Pennsylvania Avenue between the cross streets of 16th and 17th streets.

An unidentified woman and Michael Lawson Jr., age 21, of Alliance, were both struck by the train. Lawson was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman is in critical condition at the Summa Health System in Akron.

The woman and Lawson were walking adjacent to the tracks before the train approached. It appears that they attempted to cross the tracks before the train struck them, according to Highway Patrol.
