No More After-Hours Emails? This California Bill Introduces An Employee’s Right To Disconnect
In today’s “always-on” work culture, a shift towards prioritizing work-life balance is gaining momentum. This past March, two California leaders supported a bill calling for a 32-hour workweek. This month, California continues to evolve the conversation around the future of work with the introduction of the “right to disconnect.” Assembly Bill 2751 (AB 2751), introduced by San Francisco’s Assemblymember Matt Haney, proposes a simple idea: allow employees to ignore work-related communications, like calls, emails, and texts from employers, after their workday ends. If passed into law, this bill would make California the first state in the U.S. to officially protect employees’ right to disconnect from work during their personal time. This movement isn’t new — The “right to disconnect” was first implemented in France in 2017, requiring companies with over 50 employees to establish rules about after-hours email. Since then, 12 other countries, like Italy, Spain, and Belgium, have adopted similar measures to protect employees’ personal time. Portugal is the most recent country to join this growing initiative, when they passed legislation in 2021 that prohibits employers from contacting employees outside of work hours.
The $20 California Minimum Wage For Fast-Food Workers Is Officially In Effect
California’s minimum wage for the state’s fast-food workers has officially increased to $20 per hour as of April 1, 2024. The increase comes from legislation AB 1228 by Assemblymember Chris R. Holden, which authorizes the Fast Food Council to set standards for minimum wage and develop working conditions — including health, safety standards and training. “California is home to more than 500,000 fast-food workers who — for decades — have been fighting for higher wages and better working conditions,” said California Governor Gavin Newsom in statement last September 2023 when he signed the bill. “We take one step closer to fairer wages, safer and healthier working conditions, and better training by giving hardworking fast-food workers a stronger voice and seat at the table.” In a study by Shift Project, they found that in 2022 the average hourly wage for fast-food workers was only $16.21 which was far less than their counterparts in California. According to the research in 2022, the average wage for non-fast food service workers in the state was $19.15 an hour — about $3 an hour more than that of a fast food wage.

APRIL FOOLS: A Proposed “Transplant Tax” Law Will Charge People Who Plan To Relocate To Los Angeles County
DISCLAIMER: This article was published as an April Fools joke. Los Angeles County officials may adopt an ordinance being coined as the “Transplant Tax” this November 2024 — that will charge individuals who plan to move to within the county and city. But there’s a catch as to who exactly this targets. Under the ordinance, if an out-of-state content creator plans to move to Los Angeles, they must prove their contribution to the county — meaning if you are an upcoming TikToker looking to relocate to Tinseltown, you may be out of luck. According to the proposed law, you must show proof of how your online content contributes to the well-being of the county, city, and locals. Many from all walks of life took to online forums like Reddit to both praise and rip apart the proposed ordinance.
