    16-year-old girl dead after northwest Alabama shooting

    SHEFFIELD, Ala. ( WHNT ) — A 16-year-old girl has died after a shooting took place in Sheffield on Wednesday morning.

    According to the Sheffield Police Department, the shooting took place along S. Nashville Street around 1 a.m.

    Upon arrival, officers found the teenage girl lying in the grass with a gunshot wound. Officers said the teen was shot in her back between her shoulder blades. Police believe she was not the intended target.

    The SPD said she was transported to Helen Keller Hospital, where she died from her injuries.

    Jefferson County school resource officers hold active shooter training

    Florence City Schools confirmed the teen was a student at Florence High School and released the following statement:

    Florence City Schools confirms that a Florence High School student has passed away following a tragic incident in Sheffield. Due to privacy concerns, we are unable to release further details. Our thoughts and condolences are with the student’s family and friends during this difficult period.

    The investigation remains ongoing by the SPD. Those with information on the shooting are urged to call the SPD at 256-383-1771
