Fans of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry know that their time together in the UK was filled with ups and downs. While it was where their love story blossomed, where they got married, welcomed their son Archie, and so on, it was also a place that propagated hate against Markle, and often put their family in harm’s way because of it.

In a new interview with Harry, the Duke of Sussex looked back on how the media attention has taken a toll on his life, and the firm decision he made for his and his wife’s future. “It felt like harassment,” he said of paparazzi attention in the ITV documentary Tabloids on Trial , per Entertainment Tonight . “It felt horrible then. It feels horrible now.”
“It’s one of the reasons why I won’t bring my wife back to this country,” Harry said of Markle.
In 2019, Harry took matters into his own hands and sued Mirror Group Newspapers , aka the publisher of the Daily Mirror , Daily Record, Sunday Mirror and The People , for acquiring information in unlawful ways from years of 1991 to 2011. In December 2023, he won the case .
“I’m trying to get justice for everybody,” Harry said of his victory. “This is a David versus Goliath situation, [where] the Davids are the claimants and the Goliath is a vast media enterprise.”
Of course, going after the media wasn’t a simple decision. “It is clear now to everybody that the risk of taking on the press and the risk of such retaliation from them of taking these claims forward — and it’s clearly not in [the royal family’s] interest to do that,” Harry said of the British royals
In fact, he suggested that his desire to speak out and fight the press further strained their relations . “Anything I say about my family results in a torrent of abuse from the press… I’ve made it very clear that this is something that needs to be done. It would be nice if we, you know, did it as a family,” Harry reflected. “I believe that, again, from a service standpoint and when you are in a public role, that these are the things that we should be doing for the greater good.”
“I think everything that’s played out has shown people what the truth of the matter is,” he said. “For me, the mission continues, but it has, it has, yes. It’s caused, yeah, as you say, part of a rift.”
While we understand that fighting the press might’ve caused a further divide between his family, we’d hope that the royals, much like the rest of the world, would hear him out on this one. After all, he’s doing whatever he can to protect himself, his family, and any other celebrity out there from the pain and violation he once felt.
