Kylie Jenner Says Postpartum Depression Had Her 'Hysterically Crying' on the Phone to Kris: 'It's Really Hard'

Kylie Jenner knows what it’s like to go through the depths of postpartum depression. The Kylie Cosmetics founder experienced PPD after the births of both her children, Stormi , 6, and Aire , 2, and in a cover story for British Vogue , Jenner said she’s only just starting to feel “like myself again.”

Jenner explained that she experienced postpartum depression for an extended period of time after both pregnancies, and that it affected her ability to make decisions. “Being pregnant, I wore sweatpants every day,” she told the outlet. “I didn’t have time to figure out even some of the little things in my life, and then postpartum lasted a year. Mentally, it’s really hard. Hormonally, it’s really hard.” After giving birth to Aire in 2022, Jenner said, “I’m finally feeling like myself again” at age 27.

The experience was different both times, she added. With Aire, her youngest, “it was major baby blues. I was just so emotional over things that I probably wouldn’t be that emotional about [typically].” Jenner remembered being “on the phone with my mom all day, hysterically crying,” while she tried to decide what to name her son. “Now my advice to all my friends having children is pick the name before, because when the hormones hit you can’t make decisions. You can’t.” According to the CDC , other symptoms of postpartum depression include a lack of energy, prolonged feelings of sadness, anxiety, and emptiness, and a loss of interest in hobbies and activities.

It’s not the first time Jenner has opened up about postpartum depression, which affects 1 in 7 women, according to studies . The beauty mogul previously spoke about her struggles in Vanity Fair Italy in 2023 while offering some advice to other moms going through the same thing: “Stay inside that moment, even if it is painful,” she said. “I know, in those moments you think that it will never pass, that your body will never be the same as before, that you will never be the same. That’s not true: the hormones, the emotions at that stage are much, much more powerful and bigger than you. My advice is to live through that transition, without fear of the aftermath.”

In the British Vogue interview, Jenner also spoke candidly about another area of postpartum life she’s had to contend with: body-shaming . Jenner revealed that both Stormi and Aire were around 9 pounds when they were born, and that she (of course) gained weight while pregnant. “I finally lost all the baby weight after my daughter and then got pregnant with my son two months later,” she said. “I felt in shape and it was working out, and then I got pregnant and did it all over again. I feel like people didn’t give me, or give women in general, enough empathy.”

She said she’s bothered by online speculation that she’s taken a weight-loss drug like Ozempic. “I’m back at my weight I was before I had my daughter and son and people are putting side by sides of me three months postpartum. I’m like: ‘Does everyone forget that I had two children and I gained 60 pounds both pregnancies?'”

We’ll second Jenner’s call for less comparison and more empathy, especially for those who have just given birth. The mental and physical recovery after having kids isn’t easy, and we all deserve more kindness when going through something so difficult — including celebrities like Jenner , forced to go through it in the public eye.
