The Alabama Sports Writers Association released its Week 1 media rankings, and of the four teams who entered the season in the top 10, none of them ended the week where they started.

The Spain Park Jaguars and Vincent Yellow Jackets rose in the rankings released on Wednesday, Aug. 28, and while the Thompson Warriors and Briarwood Christian Lions remained in their respective top 10s, both slipped from their initial rankings.

The Helena Huskies and Chelsea Hornets also both received votes in the Class 6A poll.

Spain Park rose one spot to No. 4 in the Class 6A rankings. This came after their 38-7 win over Sparkman which saw quarterback Brock Bradley throw for five touchdowns and the Jags defense secure four turnovers against Class 7A opposition.

The Jags will now go across town to face Class 7A No. 5 Hoover on Friday, Aug. 30 at the Hoover Met in the latest edition of the rivalry between the city’s two high schools.

Vincent also bumped up a spot this week as the Jackets now sit at No. 7 in the Class 2A top 10. While Vincent benefitted from a Clarke County loss, it also took care of business on the field by grinding out a 19-6 win on the road at Winterboro in Week 1.

With that opening result behind them, the Jackets will return home to face former region rival B.B. Comer on Friday, Aug. 30 in hopes of improving to 2-0 and reversing their recent fortune against the Tigers.

Thompson took a high-profile loss on national TV, but the Warriors only slipped one spot to No. 3 as a result of their 15-14 defeat to Georgia’s Grayson in overtime. Coach Mark Freeman’s side earned 139 votes, just one behind second-place Enterprise but only two more than fourth-place Auburn.

Now, Thompson will look to bounce back and get in the win column with a trip to Nashville on Thursday, Aug. 29 to face the Lipscomb Academy Mustangs.

Briarwood also faced defeat in its season opener, and the Lions fell to No. 10 in Class 5A because of their loss to Oak Mountain in a 38-28 game.

The team hopes to turn around its fortunes with a tough road trip to Homewood to face the Patriots at Waldrop Stadium on Friday, Aug. 30.

Two other teams in Shelby County received votes this week, and both were in Class 6A. The Helena Huskies earned 13 votes and the Chelsea Hornets took home three votes.

While Helena is still waiting to play its season opener at the McAdory Yellow Jackets on Friday, Aug. 30, Chelsea is riding high after a 24-3 win over Mobile Christian and will face Wetumpka on Aug. 30.

Among the eight rankings published, the biggest shakeup came in Class 5A as Guntersville surpassed Ramsay for the No. 1 spot in the classification.
