Cleveland County residents will have a new dining option this fall if McAlister's Deli moves forward with plans to open a Shelby location.

The popular deli, which has 28 restaurants across the state, including one in Gastonia, began eyeing the former Kozi Italian building in 2023 with plans to open alongside an AFC Urgent Care.

The deli offers sandwiches, soups, spuds and other items, according to its website.

"At this time, the restaurant is slated to open in late October of this year, but that is subject to change," said Melodi Brown, manager of brand public relations, in an email to The Star . "Additional details around location and dining options for guests will become available closer to our grand opening date."

Brian Burgess, director of planning and development for the city of Shelby, confirmed it appeared the project was still moving forward for McAlister’s, as they were still scheduling inspections. He said the city does not yet know when the project is expected to be completed.
