Three arrested for felony theft in connection to stolen cargo trailer in Shelby County

SHELBY COUNTY, Texas ( KETK ) – Three people were arrested for their alleged involvement in the theft of more than $120,000 worth of property.

The investigation began when the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office received a report that an 18-foot cargo trailer containing lineman equipment was stolen from the 2500 block of CR 2571 in Shelbyville. They also reported that roughly 500 gallons of diesel were siphoned from vehicles and equipment on the property.

The SCSO said they were working “numerous” burglaries in that area and urged residents to lock all doors and vehicles on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the sheriff’s office announced the arrests of the following people:

• Christopher Askew, 39
• Ira Alsip, 30
• Curtis Estes, 56

Askew, of Shelbyville, was charged with felony theft of property, unlawful carrying of a weapon with a felony conviction, two felony counts of possession of a controlled substance and a parole violation.

Alsip, also of Shelbyville, was charged alongside Estes with felony theft of property. Additionally, 25-year-old Lillian Jernigan of Joaquin was arrested for an outstanding warrant.

With the arrests, authorities were able to recover the cargo trailer and the equipment inside along with guns from other burglaries. Their investigation is ongoing.
