SHELL LAKE — The Shell Lake Lions Club has been generous in its distribution of nearly $10,000 to worthy causes in Washburn County recently. The club awarded $8,000 in scholarships to seniors graduating from Shell Lake High School this year.

One $2,000 scholarship was designated to a graduating senior going into the medical profession and six general scholarships of $1,000 were also awarded.

“These scholarships reflect both the Lions Club’s commitment to the greater Shell Lake area and also the community’s commitment to supporting their Lions Club. This type of support for graduating seniors wouldn’t be possible without this support,” said newly elected Lions President Tom Dahlstrom.

This year’s recipients were Jessica Haynes, Donavan Balts, Maddie Melton, Mark Skluzacek, Aaden Jensen and Emily Swan, who were awarded $1,000 scholarships, while Hannah Foust was awarded the $2,000 medical scholarship.

Lions Club member Deb Nebel was impressed with the quality of the candidates.

“We had difficult decisions to make this year; there were so many qualified candidates. I was really impressed with all the applicants,” said Nebel.

In addition to the scholarships, the Lions also donated another $500 to a new summer event, the Great Shell Lake Get Together. The concept was initiated by Shell Lake Mayor Rowie Hansberger.

“This will be a free event to all and I visualize this as an old-fashioned, city-wide picnic,” said Hansberger. “Besides the Lions Club, Louie’s Finer Meats in Cumberland donated brats and the Sawyer Creek Cattle Company is donating ground beef for the hamburgers. Shell Lake Marine, the Shell Lake Chamber of Commerce, Xcel Energies and Republic Services have also been donors. In addition to the brats and burgers with all the sides, we’ll also be serving root beer floats.”

The event will be held on July 14 between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the newly remodeled Beach House and the pavilion.

Once again, the Lions also donated to the Washburn County Relay for Life’s walk to raise funds to combat cancer.

“Everyone’s been touched by cancer in some way, including the Shell Lake Lions,” said longtime Relay for Life Chairman Steve Clay, who has a co-chair this year with the addition of Kate Folstad.

“The Lions have always been generous, and this year’s $1,000 donation to help fight cancer is a continuation of that generosity,” said Clay and Folstad.

Clay, now in his 26th year of chairing the event, said $20,000 was donated last year, and he and Folstad hope to meet or exceed that amount this year.

“Mary Hemshrot will be the honorary chairperson this year, the Shell Lake Honor Guard will be present and we hope to get Kate to sing the national anthem,” concluded Clay.

This year, the Relay for Life will be held on June 14 between 5 and 10 p.m. at the Shell Lake Lakefront Pavilion.
