Sherwood residents were encouraged to brush up on their bear safety knowledge after a handful of sightings of a black bear in the area.

The city of Sherwood posted a reminder on social media of what to do when encountering a bear after a black bear was spotted around the Sherwood Family YMCA and on some trails.

“It was caught on someone’s security camera and the video was posted in a local community group,” Sherwood Police Officer Paul Mattson said. “It’s a single black bear and it’s been seen walking through the Woodhaven and Pinehurst neighborhoods near the YMCA.”

There have been sightings of the bear since May, Mattson said, and it has only been spotted at night so far. No incidents involving the bear have been reported.

Though attacks are rare, it’s important to remember to never approach or feed bears. During an encounter, do not run. Instead, maintain eye contact, make noise, clap your hands and slowly back away. Ensure food is stored in containers, and keep dogs on leash to avoid attracting bears.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has more information about how to handle bear encounters online .
