One of Queen Elizabeth’s Aides Says the Late Monarch Showed Her True Colors Over ‘Rude’ Comment Just Days Before Her Death

Here's what one of Queen Elizabeth's longtime employees remembers about their very last conversation with the late monarch.

Many people around the world can recall exactly where they were when they heard the news that Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, had died.

As the country marked the second anniversary of her death, some of those who got to know and work with the queen over the years are reflecting on the time they spent with her and remembering the last conversations they had with her. That includes one of her most trusted employees, Terry Pendry, who revealed why the late monarch called him “rude” during their final ride together.

Pendry was Queen Elizabeth’s longtime stud groom and had gone riding with her countless times. During an episode of the Rosebud With Gyles Brandreth podcast, Pendry spoke about the last ride they ever had and why she told him she thought he said something “rude.”

Express quoted Pendry, who worked with the queen for nearly three decades, as saying that she was so “tiny” and “frail” toward the end of her life that she needed to be helped off her mount, although she could still climb into the saddle herself.

Pendry recalled that he asked to take a picture of her during the ride with her pony, Emma. The queen asked him, “What do you want to do that for?” and he replied, “Well, you’d like one for your scrapbook. Your pony’s 26, you’re 96, that has to be a record.'”

The next day, when visiting Emma which ended up being for the final time, the queen said to Pendry: “You were very rude to me yesterday.” He was taken aback and responded: “Your Majesty, I’m awfully sorry, but what do you mean, rude? If I was, I apologize profusely — it wouldn’t have been intentional and I apologize. Was it something I said?” To which she answered, “You said my age,” before they both burst into fits of laughter.

Pendry explained that even in her final days, the queen showed her true colors with her wit and great sense of humor.

“That was just her,” Pendry added.

Emma captured the hearts of millions during the queen’s funeral

While Pendry’s name may not immediately be recognized by some, those who watched Queen Elizabeth’s funeral saw him standing alongside Emma in one of the most emotional moments that day.

Cameras captured Pendry and Emma standing on the grounds of Windsor Castle to say goodbye to the queen. As the hearse carrying her coffin passed by them, Pendry lowered his head and Emma picked up her leg then placed it behind her in what many said resembled a cursty to the monarch.

Emma took part in three pageants at the Royal Windsor Horse Show over the years including for Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday and her Platinum Jubilee. In December, the queen’s beloved pony was voted “Horse of a Lifetime” at the Horse & Hound Awards.
