There's a good reason why Calvary football's Kolby Thomas has attracted new college offers

Recruiting continues to heat up for Calvary football’s Kolby Thomas, one of the key contributors in the Cavaliers’ run to the LHSAA Select Division III state championship last season.

At 5-foot-10 and 170 pounds, Thomas doesn’t attract dramatic attention with his size, but his speed and his hands are another matter.

“Kolby is an excellent route runner with sprinter’s speed,” said Calvary coach Rodney Guin. “He reminds me of Evangel greats Thomas Bachman and Trent Taylor. And he is one of the hardest workers I have coached.”

The senior has FBS offers from Louisiana Tech and Louisiana-Lafayette, along with an FCS offer from Northwestern State. For a long time, Thomas watched higher-profile teammates land offers. He joins teammates Devin Harper (LSU commit) and James Simon (Texas commit) as 2025 Cavaliers with FBS offers.

TEXAS COMMIT:Here are several reasons why Calvary's James Simon is solid with Texas

“I’m getting more attention from coaches and different schools," he said. "Every single one is kind of like a dream come true, so I'm very thankful for that.”

In 2023, the speedster caught 70 passes for 817 yards and 11 scores despite playing alongside two collegiate receivers in John Simon and Aubrey Hermes, both now at Louisiana Tech.

In addition to his speed, the football IQ of Thomas is something that sets him apart from most receivers.

“In our offense we have to read defenses − what coverages they’re in and what zones to sit in,” Thomas said. “I’ve spent years trying to perfect that.”

Thomas can high-point the ball with the best of them and is versatile enough to play just about anywhere. He’ll also lineup as a defensive back for Calvary and can play quarterback if needed. One high school coach called him the best overall athlete on the Calvary team.

He’s been on a couple of visits to Lafayette and was offered by the Ragin’ Cajuns while he was in town for a camp.

“And then the next day the Lord kind of just put it in play that we needed to go Northwestern State’s camp cause their coaches were texting me up early that morning,” Thomas said. “So, we went to go get an IV, and went down there and killed the camp.”

An offer followed. The Cavaliers played in 7-on-7 tournaments on successive days in Ruston, which resulted in a Tech offer after Sonny Cumbie and company were witness to Thomas’ talents.

Now, it’s just a waiting game to see who else comes calling before Thomas makes his decision.
