ROCKVILLE, Md. ( DC News Now ) — A Maryland man was sentenced to 27 years in prison for nearly killing his landlord during a dispute about rent over four years ago in Silver Spring.

Geoffrey Gaitan, 31, will now spend nearly three decades in prison after being found guilty in April of attempted murder in the second degree.

Investigators say Gaitan beat his then 63-year-old landlord, hitting him several times with two solid wood table legs and stomping on his head after he fell to the ground.

The attack happened on April 19, 2020, in a home on the 9700 block of Hastings Drive in Silver Spring.

The victim suffered multiple skull fractures and permanent, traumatic brain injury.

The conviction happened after the third jury trial in this case. Two previous trials ended with a hung jury.

Gaitan will have five years of supervised probation after his release.
