2024 John Deere Classic picks, predictions, odds, field: Golf expert fading Jordan Spieth at TPC Deere Run

Amateur Luke Clanton will attempt to stay hot when he tees off in the 2024 John Deere Classic beginning Thursday at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill. In the last month Clanton, who recently finished an all-America sophomore season at Florida State, was the runner-up as the low amateur in the U.S. Open and contended at last week's Rocket Mortgage Classic before tying for 10th. This week, Clanton is a +4500 to win. Meanwhile two-time John Deere Classic champion Jordan Spieth, defending champion Sepp Straka and Sungjae Im are co-favorites in the 2024 John Deere Classic odds, at +1800.

Aaron Rai (+2200), Maverick McNealy (+2500), Keith Mitchell (+2500) and Denny McCarthy (+2500) round out the top seven on the odds board among the 156 John Deere Classic players. One surprise: Nejad is down on the chances of co-favorite Spieth (+1800). The 30-year-old Texan is in the midst of one of the worst slumps of his career. He has not won since the 2022 RBC Heritage, and his world ranking has dropped to No. 32, the lowest since April 2021.

One of the reasons for Spieth's struggles this season has been his approach play. He ranks 110th on Tour in strokes gained: approach the green (-0.085). "His short odds in this tournament are exclusively based on name recognition, and I think he belongs in the +3000 range," Nejad told SportsLine.

Instead, Nejad is high on the chances of Straka (+1800), the defending champion. Ranked No. 24 in the world, Straka enters the John Deere Classic on a roll. Over the last three months, he has three top-five finishes and has made the cut in eight of nine starts. By contrast, over the first three months of the season, he had zero top-10 finishes and missed the cut in four of eight events.
