Local Vietnam Veterans Honored at 50th Anniversary Pinning Ceremony
Numerous local veterans who served during the Vietnam War were honored for their sacrifice and service during a special 50th anniversary Vietnam-era veteran pinning ceremony Monday afternoon. Congressman Nick Langworthy hosted the ceremony featuring the 179 veterans at Cassadaga Valley Central School in Sinclairville. Panama man receives 6-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to violating his probation... A Panama man will spend the next six-years in state prison after pleading guilty to violating terms of his probation this past May. Chautauqua County District Attorney Jason Schmidt says 38-year-old Billy Heilman received the sentence from County Court Judge David Foley... along with three-years of post-release supervision. Schmidt says in February of 2023... Jamestown police conducted a traffic stop in the city... and, found methamphetamines in Heilman’s possession... leading to his arrest. This past February 2024... the DA says Heilman pled guilty, and was sentenced to five-years probation after being convicted of fourth-degre criminal possession of a controlled substance. This past May... the county's Office of Probation filed a violation against Heilman for not complying with the terms of his probation. Schmidt thanked JPD... and, the Probation Department for their work on the case.
City of Jamestown Reminds Residents: Fireworks Are Illegal in New York State

DHS Class of 2024 Participates in Senior Sweep
The City of Dunkirk recently hosted some of the now-graduated seniors from Dunkirk High School for the city's annual Senior Sweep. This tradition involves the seniors going around the city collecting any trash or litter left. This year, the seniors collected more than 15 bags of trash from different areas, including Washington Park and Wright Park. Afterwards, the class enjoyed pizza with some of the city officials and a photo with Mayor Kate Wdowiasz. The city gives special thanks to its DPW employees and G&E Tents for their help with the Senior Sweep and also extends its congratulations to all of the graduates in the area, especially those from Dunkirk High School.
Ferguson Says Pro-Housing Pledge Will Stimulate Growth in Fredonia Area
The Mayor of Fredonia says the village's recent adoption of a New York State Pro-Housing Community pledge is designed to encourage future growth in and around the village. United Way Seeking Nominations for Joseph H. Mason Award
The United Ways of Chautauqua County are currently seeking nominations for the 2024 Joseph H. Mason Award. The award recognizes the community service of a local union member. Now in its 43rd year, the Joseph H. Mason Award and “Salute to Labor” recognition dinner honor the memory of Mr. Mason and all that he did for our community. This year, for the first time in its history, nominations are open to union members from the entire county.
City DPW Announces Changes in Rubbish Collection Schedule for July 4th Holiday
The City of Dunkirk DPW's rubbish pickup schedule will be different this week due to the July 4th holiday. Rubbish in the Thursday collection zone (District A) will be picked up on Friday, while rubbish in the Friday collection zone (District D) will be picked up on Saturday. You may refer to the 2024 Curbside Collection Schedule for further information. Copies of the Curbside Collection Schedule are still available in the City Clerk's Office, City Treasurer's Office and Public Works Department, as well as the city's website. City Hall will be closed on Thursday, July 4th.
City of Dunkirk's July 4th Celebration Begins Wednesday
The City of Dunkirk's waterfront will be jam-packed with activity this week, as the city gets ready to celebrate our nation's 248th birthday. This year's Fourth of July celebration in the city will be a four-day event that will run Wednesday through Saturday. Evergreen Health Relocates Free Narcan Vending Machine in Dunkirk
Evergreen Health recently relocated its free Narcan vending machine in Dunkirk. The machine that was installed earlier this year at Dunkirk Express on East 5th Street in the city has been moved to Safe Point Lighthouse at 303 Main Street. Evergreen Health has an additional Narcan vending machine at its location at 320 Prather Avenue in Jamestown.
Jamestown YMCA Now Offering Summer Feeding Program in Greater Jamestown Area
Food will be available at the various sites across Jamestown and surrounding communities Mondays through Fridays as of Monday, July 1. Parents/Guardians and/or children can arrive to pick up a fully prepared, balanced meal. Food sites are available thanks to the YMCA’s partnership with the City of Jamestown, Frewsburg Parks and Recreation, Jamestown Public Schools, Prendergast Library, Falconer Central School and Hazeltine Library.
Grant Funds Available for Homeowners in Villages of Sherman and Westfield
The villages of Sherman and Westfield have grant funds available to help low- and moderate-income homeowners make necessary home repairs. Both villages were awarded $493,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds through the New York State Office of Community Renewal to assist a total of 14 homeowners -- seven for both villages.

Jamestown Tarp Skunks Host Community Buyout Night, Honoring First Responders
