Teigan Martin, a college football tight end for South Florida, has had his cause of death revealed by police officers, who also have a theory behind his fatal car accident. It has been confirmed that the 20-year-old was involved in a single-vehicle crash in Minnesota on Monday, with police believing his car crossed over a lane of traffic, entered a ditch and turned upside-down, potentially at a high speed.

Officials reportedly arrived at the scene at 5:05 a.m., at which point they saw a black BMW M5 in a ditch. First responders determined that Martin died on the scene.

Martin was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. Police are continuing their investigation, per TMZ. USF football coach Alex Golesh released a statement after news of Martin's death began to spread.

"We are heartbroken by the tragic passing of Teigan Martin,” Golesh's statement began. “His loss is felt profoundly by his teammates, our coaches and staff, and all those who knew and loved him. We extend our deepest sympathies to Teigan’s family and friends, and keep them in our thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.”

USF Football also posted on X, acknowledging Martin's death. "We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Teigan Martin," the post began . "We extend our thoughts and prayers to Teigan's family, friends, and all who knew and loved him."

Martin transferred to South Florida before the 2023 season but did not play. The 6-foot-6 freshman tight end also spent time at Liberty before transferring to play with the Bulls.

While attending Lutheran High School in Mayer, Minnesota, Martin made a name for himself, helping the school win the state championship as a senior. He played both tight end and defensive tackle and was ranked as the No. 121 tight end and No. 1,196 player overall, according to On3 Industry Ranking , and won MVP as a senior and was selected to the All-Metro second team.

Not only was Martin accomplished on the field, but he was also a presence on the hardwood. Because of his size and skill, Martin had an offer from Western Illinois to play Division I basketball, showing just how versatile he was.

Of note, Martin averaged 20 points per game as a junior at Lutheran and even surpassed the 1,000 career point mark in high school.

However, the opportunity to play football collegiately proved to be too enticing for the multi-sport athlete, garnering offers from Iowa State, South Dakota State and Western Illinois.

Funeral services for Martin will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 29 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waconia, Minnesota.
