The Hilton Garden Inn Downtown will be undergoing some renovations, as well as a rebrand to The Catlin Hotel with Hilton Tapestry this summer.

The renovations for the five-story hotel, at 201 E. 8th St. in downtown Sioux Falls, are expected to begin at the end of August, according to Dione Deul, Operation Chief & Hospitality Officer and Director of Brand Experience with Hegg Companies , the owner and manager of the property.

Construction will be conducted in stages and is anticipated to be complete by the end of 2025, excluding the exterior. Crave American Kitchen & Sushi Bar will continue as the hotel’s restaurant, and Starbucks will still offer coffee and other food and drink items.

This will be the first Hilton Tapestry hotel in South Dakota, with the nearest locations in the Twin Cities and Iowa.

The Hilton Tapestry collection is “a collection of independent hotels bringing unapologetic originality to any and every place they call home,” according to the website. There are 124 Hilton Tapestry hotels in the U.S.

The name, The Catlin, honors the history of Sioux Falls, referencing a clay mudstone called catlinite, or pipestone, beneath the city's surface. It’s similar to another prevalent layer of rock in Sioux Falls, Sioux quartzite , according to NPS.gov .  Sioux quartzite was used in many of downtown’s historical buildings and roads.

A marketing plan for the new hotel stated, “Our Catlin Hotel has much in common with its Native American namesake: It's a place for connecting, coming together and marking occasions. A place of energy and vitality and welcome. A destination that's fundamentally and unmistakably Sioux Falls. But like quartzite, it has much more to discover when you look below the surface.”

Currently, the Hilton Garden Inn downtown has 136 rooms and about 6,000 square feet of conference spaces. It’s the first hotel in Sioux Falls to offer underground parking to guests and the first in 20 years to be built downtown, according to Ernest Capital Group’s website .

The hotel provides a picturesque and luxurious stay, overlooking the Big Sioux River and near many downtown amenities like the Washington Pavilion, shops and restaurants and is close to the Joe Foss Field Airport.
