South Dakota man charged with rape

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Peyton Roelfsema, 19, of Harrisburg is charged with two counts of rape, one in the first degree and the other in the second degree for the rape of a 12-year-old.

Roelfsema appeared in Lincoln County Court on Wednesday via camera because he is being held in the Minnehaha County Jail.

The Lincoln County state’s attorney explained in court on Wednesday that Roelfsema is accused of using his fingers to penetrate the 12-year-old victim while in the presence of a 10-year-old.

Roelfsema’s charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Judge Andrew Robertson approved the state’s attorney’s request for a $100,00 cash-only bond.

If Roelfsema is able to post bond, he is to have no contact with minors, including the victim and the witness, or with the victim’s mother.

Roelfsema has entered a plea of not guilty.
