Iowa National Guard helps alleviate effects of historic flooding in Siouxland

SIOUX CITY, Iowa ( KCAU ) — Iowa Air National Guard members with the 185th Air Refueling Wing joined debris cleanup efforts over the weekend in Sioux Rapids.
According to a release , members converged on the small town to help alleviate the effects of the historic flooding in June. Residents expressed appreciation for the members’ efforts.

“That actually brought tears to my eyes,” said local high school teacher Eric Boge. “It’s been helpful and a fast process with all you guys and many hands.”
Along with members from Sioux City’s 185th ARW, 30 members from the Des Moines 132nd Wing visited Sioux Rapids to help with cleanup.
The release specified that Iowa ANG Airmen are working in the affected areas of Woodbury, Cherokee, Ida, and Buena Vista counties.
The Air Guard’s state mission has prepared Debris Removal Teams with specialized personnel and tools to assist in debris cleanup. Additionally, they are working in conjunction with local civil authorities to ensure the safety of the public by cordoning off streets while airmen operate vehicles and equipment.

“It’s extremely sad seeing all these people’s homes and valuables just destroyed,” Staff Sergeant Seth Stamm with the 185th ARW said. “But helping cleanup is all we can do.”
Deputy Base Civil Engineer Major Daniel Ress with the 185th ARW states that the unit has had no issue getting volunteers to join the effort. The volunteer guard team is expected to be on duty through the holiday week, including on the Fourth of July if necessary.
“They put their plans for the weekend aside,” Ress said. “Maybe even their plans for the holiday aside to come out and help and be here for this community.”
