SLIDELL, La. ( WGNO ) — A man has been found on all charges in connection to a 2022 drug investigation after a jury deliberated for under an hour on Friday, July 19.

According to information released by District Attorney Collin Sims, testimony during the trial showed that the man, 43-year-old Majuangy Evans, was reported to the Slidell Police Department for conducting drug transactions at gas stations in Slidell.

The reports prompted detectives to begin surveilling Evans, leading to his eventual arrest at a gas station on Natchez Drive in the morning hours of Dec. 21, 2022.

Just prior to his arrest, detectives watched as Evans bought fuel before sitting inside of his vehicle and looking around the station rather than immediately leaving.

After a few minutes, a van pulled up and a man dressed in a hospital gown exited the vehicle before opening the passenger door to Evans’ vehicle and getting in. Once he was inside, detectives saw what appeared to be a drug deal between the defendant and the man.

Once the man exited Evans’ vehicle, detectives approached and detained him, finding a bag of what was later confirmed to be fentanyl where he had been standing. The detectives also arrested and searched Evans, recovering $614 in cash from his person.

A search warrant was then obtained for Evans’ home on Eleventh Street in Slidell, resulting in the discovery of $5,000 in a jacket pocket and a small amount of methamphetamine found in the same bedroom.

Evans opted to represent himself in court rather than have an attorney appointed to him. During the testimony of detective Ben Williams, who helped lead the investigation, Evans spent several hours cross-examining him.

After the prosecution rested their case, Evans testified on his own behalf, claiming that, though he was a drug dealer, he had “quit the game” eight days before he was arrested because he knew that police were alerted to his activities.

Evans also claimed that the large amounts of money that had been recovered from him and his residence were obtained by his skill and talents in “number crunching games.”

In relation to his meeting with the man in a hospital gown at the gas station, he claimed that the man had owed him money for a loan and that the meeting was for Evans to be paid back. Evans admitted that he had sold the man drugs in the past, but maintained that he had not sold the man any drugs during the meeting detectives observed at the gas station.

Evans is charged with distribution of fentanyl, conducting a transaction involving proceeds known to be derived from a drug law violation and possession of methamphetamine. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 10.

Distribution of fentanyl carries a sentence of between 5 and 40 years. At the time of the incident, Evans was on parole after serving 19 years in prison on a 45-year drug trafficking conviction out of Jefferson Parish.
