A beautiful sight in Slidell's night
It was still hot as blazes late Saturday afternoon when gates opened to the Slidell Heritage Festival; so hot, the National Weather Service pegged the heat index at 109 degrees at 5 p.m. But it takes more than a southeast Louisiana scorcher to stop festival fans from enjoying this annual rite of summer that raises money for local nonprofits and features a masterful fireworks display at 9 p.m. Before the fireworks, Rockin' Dopsie Jr. & The Zydeco Twisters entertained the crowd, and after the pyrotechnics, Karen Waldrup and her band got everybody going again. The event, hosted by the Rotary Clubs of Slidell and Slidell northshore in conjunction with the City of Slidell and the St. Tammany Farmer, has distributed more than $1,000,000 to local charities over the past 25 years. This year's recipients are the Slidell Police Association; the Boy Scouts Cypress District; Notes for Education Northshore; Truth in Nature; and the Bayou Lacombe Cardinals.
