Field of Dreams gymnasts place in nationals

Three gymnasts from Smithfield’s Field of Dreams Gymnastics placed in the Amateur Athletic Union National Gymnastics Championship, held June 20-23 in Daytona Beach, Florida. Out of roughly 3,000 girls from 31 states, 11-year-old Mackenzie Hess placed seventh all-around in the platinum division. Anna Bardwell, 15, placed third all-around in the gold division. Averi Bowe, age 9, placed ninth all-around, also in the gold division.

Hess also placed ninth in vaulting, where gymnasts launch themselves into the air from a springboard, seventh in swinging from uneven bars, seventh in crossing a balance beam, and eighth in a floor exercise routine to music.

Bardwell also placed fifth in vaulting, third in bars, second on the balance beam and fifth in floor exercise.
