Banned Player Wins Casino Jackpot, Gets Arrested
A banned Iowa player won a jackpot in a casino, despite being self-excluded. The man, who used a fake identity, was arrested, prompting an investigation into the matter. Matthew James Wessels, 43, was a self-excluded player who enrolled in the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission’s self-exclusion program in January last year. However, Wessels couldn’t resist the temptation and eventually visited Isle Hotel Casino in Waterloo, according to reports.

Nebraska Man Injured In Alton Accident
Alton, Iowa – A South Sioux City man was injured in a single-vehicle crash Wednesday evening (July 17th) on Highway 60, just south of Alton. The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office says around 6:45 Wednesday evening the Sioux County Communications Center received calls reporting that 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee was being driven in an unsafe manner, northbound on Highway 60. Deputies say before they could locate and stop the Jeep its driver, who authorities identify as 31-year-old Orson Castillo, lost control of the SUV and struck a bridge.
Officer George Athan Selected As Lake View’s Next Police Chief
The Lake View City Council will host a special meeting this (Friday) afternoon for the appointment of a new head for the Lake View Police Department (LVPD). The council convenes at 12:30 p.m. at the Lake View Municipal Building to consider a resolution to appoint George Athan, a current LVPD officer, as the new police chief. Athan will be sworn in following the council’s approval of the resolution. Athan’s previous law enforcement experience includes time with the Dunlap Police Department and the Sac County Sheriff’s Office. The only other items on the agenda for Friday’s special session include a discussion of a “Party in the Park” event slated for Aug. 2 and a routine liquor license approval. Final Pleasant Prairie Threshing Bee to be held this month
After 25 years, Nick Foster will hold the final Pleasant Prairie Threshing Bee on July 27. Foster is the president of the Greene County Historical Society, a farmer in Jefferson, and he collects antique tractors and farming equipment. Foster described a threshing machine as essentially a stationary combine that separates the grain from the stalk and chaff.
