The top 10 award-winning PSAs were revealed on June 17 at a ceremony at the Long Island Children’s Museum, where the videos of the top 30 finalists are on display through the end of July.

Seeing perfectly good food wasted while women in a nearby shelter struggled to find enough to eat deeply moved Linda Breitstone. This personal connection to the issue spurred her into action. Armed with determination, a station wagon, and a few coolers, the Rockville Centre resident began her mission. She discovered many food establishments were discarding excess food at the end of the day and found many people in need of it. This led to the establishment of Island Harvest Food Bank in 1992.
Valley Stream District 24 swears in new Board of Education
The Valley Stream District 24 Board of Education recently held its annual reorganization meeting to swear in its members and welcome the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. Newly elected member Alisa Clark was sworn in for her first year as trustee. Armando Hernandez was sworn in as president, and Melissa Herrera was sworn in as vice president. Superintendent Unal Karakas and district clerk Jennie Padilla were also sworn in for the new year. Attorney Chris Shishko was present to administer the oaths to all incoming officials.

Village awards Grogan with State Senate Veteran Award
Steve Grogan, PIO and publicity chairman for the American Legion Post 335, received the State Senate Veteran Award on Monday. Grogan is a Vietnam-era veteran, who served on active duty for five years as a special agent with US Army Intelligence. He is now an active member of Lynbrook American Legion Post 335. Grogan designed a new membership drive for the post, which has been shared with other Nassau County posts.
Town calls for public hearing on shellfish
Saying that the town’s focus is to preserve and protect its marine environment, the Oyster Bay Town Board acted on two measures at its July 23 meeting. First, it called for a public hearing Aug. 13 to consider a law establishing a six-month moratorium on shellfish harvesting in approximately 1,850 acres of underwater land in Oyster Bay and Cold Spring harbors.

Former Nassau County Fire Service Academy Employee Indicted for Defrauding Workers’ Compensation
Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly announced that a former employee of the Nassau County Fire Service Academy was indicted on Grand Larceny, Falsifying Business Records, and Fraudulent Practices of the Workers’ Compensation Law for fraudulently receiving more than $16,000 of workers’ compensation benefits. The defendant continued to volunteer as a firefighter in Massapequa and maintained other employment cleaning a local church and working at a tax preparation office despite allegedly submitting documentation stating that she was not working while she collected the benefits.
