SOMERSET, Pa. (WTAJ) — The Historical and Genealogical Society of Somerset County celebrated the grand opening of the new Pennsylvania Maple Museum.

A ribbon cutting for the museum was held Saturday afternoon. It’s located on a lane behind the Somerset Historical Center.

Visitors got the chance to view the exhibits and watch demonstrations on how the equipment was utilized. The exhibits contain over 100 artifacts of maple sugaring utensils used throughout the state’s maple industry, many of which were donated by maple producers from across the state.

Executive Director of the Historical and Genealogical Society of Somerset County Mark Ware donated several artifacts for the museum himself and said it’s only fitting the museum is in Somerset.

“Somerset County has been a huge producer of maple products since the late 1700s due to its climate, high elevation, and large farm population,” Ware said. “Even though Somerset County is the largest producer of Maple products the making of maple products has expanded across the entire state now and there are 6 different maple sugar producing regions across Pennsylvania.”

Ware said that the museum wouldn’t have been possible without donations and support from maple producers across the state.
