    Pedestrian Bridge Connecting Main Street Somerville Apartment Buildings Lowered into Place Above South Davenport Street

    Pre-fabricated pedestrian bridge is lowered into place above South Davenport Street in Someville Tuesday morning.

    SOMERVILLE, NJ - A pre-fabricated bridge was lowered into place between the Edge I and Edge II apartment buildings over South Davenport Street Tuesday morning.

    Preliminary site plan work had begun June 22; by the end of the week, two pits had been excavated, one alongside the Starbuck's, where customers inside worked their laptops and sipped their coffees watching the bridge being lowered into place on Tuesday.

    The dproject is expected to be completed by July 12.

    Forms were installed for concrete which was poured into the pit by a transit mix truck to create the footings for the bridge, which will be 17’ 6” above South Davenport Street and will provide covered residential access between the Edge I and Edge II apartment buildings and the parking deck located at the western portion of the project area behind Edge II.

    Temporary barriers and detour signs have been installed on West Main Street.

    The road will be completely closed for 4 weeks between West Main Street and the entrance to the parking area near Starbucks through July 12.

    Intermittent road closure: The road will be closed, as needed, between West Main Street and the entrance to the Chase bank.

    Traffic plan during construction

    From West Main Street, there will be no entry to South Davenport Street;

    From Veterans Memorial Drive, the entrance to South Davenport Street will remain open to traffic;

    From the ShopRite parking lot, exit will be a left-turn only;

    From the Chase Bank parking area, exit will be a right -turn only;

    Directional signs will guide pedestrians and motor vehicles around the construction;

    The sidewalk on the south side of West Main Street remains closed to pedestrians due to the ongoing construction of the second Edge building;

    Pedestrians must use the sidewalk on the north side of the street as indicated by signs currently in place,
