    Raleigh County Commission approves Sophia Little League grant for lawn equipment, all-star tournament

    BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Sophia Little League was a subject discussion at Tuesday’s Regular Session meeting of the Raleigh County Commission.

    Opening the business of the session with exonerations and budget revisions, commission members moved to consideration of a grant in the amount of $7,679.52 which would go toward lawn equipment for the Sophia Little League organization.

    Raleigh County Administrator, Jay Quesenberry provided context to the situation, stating that the organization has been using outdated equipment for many years, thanks in no small part to the know-how of a particular coach who has been actively maintaining the equipment.

    “At the Sofia Little League, they’re using the same mower they’ve been using for twenty years. The the main coach there happens to be a very good mechanic and he’s been able to keep that going for twenty years and this is really going to help them out,” said Quesenberry of the grant. “They do a great, great job for the kids and Sophia.”

    Later during the meeting came consideration of an additional grant pertaining to the Sophia Little League organization. This grant, proposed in the amount of $3,000, would be utilized for all-star team player participation in the Junior League State Tournament.

    “This is really exciting,” said Quesenberry of the prospect. “These young players are going to get to go to Martinsburg and participate in the state tournament. This is really going to help them.”

    Both the grant proposal for the purchase of lawn equipment and the grant proposal for funds to assist the all-star team participate in the Junior League tournament were approved by members of the commission during Tuesday’s Regular Session meeting.
