Aptos’ ‘World’s Shortest Parade’ celebrates its 63rd year
A warm Thursday morning brought out hundreds of spectators and participants to the World’s Shortest Parade in Aptos for Independence Day, 2024. As usual, hundreds of celebrants watched the homegrown parade amble down Soquel Drive in Aptos, from State Park Avenue into Aptos Village, bringing smiles, cheers and the usual festive atmosphere.

Thousands of people lined the main streets of Watsonville and Aptos Thursday to watch the parades that have become a tradition stretching back decades. The Spirit of Watsonville parade kicked off at noon, two hours after the Worlds Shortest Parade, which takes place in Aptos on Soquel Avenue in Mid-County.

We’re in the full swing of summer now, and most representative species are on the bite. From Big Sur up to Franklin Point, local anglers and visitors are pursuing rockfish, lingcod, halibut, sole and the occasional white sea bass. Much of this bounty can be credited to abundant bait in the bay. Squid spawns have started back up again in spots, mostly near Monterey. Big anchovy schools can be found in the deeper, more central areas of the bay. The year started out with a good showing of sardines, but we’ve received few reports of the speedy little baitfish recently.
